She has all the glow and brightness of an expectant mother. Her eyes shine in the dimming seaside afternoon sunlight, and her smile draws you in. She's lighting up the sunset with all of her being. Her lover stands beside her, a firm hand resting gently on her abdomen. He feels the baby kick, and she glimpses the ghost of a tear in his eye as he quickly wipes it away.
Giedre and Kyriakos did not meet the way many people would expect. They met, of all places, at a donkey farm. Donkeys are common in Cyprus, as they are a symbol of the island, but we don't tend to think of them as a romantic background to burgeoning love. Giedre and Kyriakos were complete strangers that chanced upon each other in an unusual situation, but there was clearly a connection the moment their eyes met. They are now living together in bliss and harmony. Although still pregnant at the time of this photo shoot, they since had their baby, a little boy named Jonas.
We decided to go to one of the beaches in Paphos, Cyprus. Instead of looking for dramatic and eye-catching backgrounds, we chose the simple surroundings of the banana trees and sandy shore. It would not have mattered if there were a thousand different sights to see that day; Giedre stole the spotlight in a pure white dress that accentuated her full-grown baby bump. Her joyful attitude and enthusiasm helped put Kyriakos at ease. He hadn't been too fond of the idea for a photo shoot, but he soon warmed up to it.
I took several shots of them standing close to one another. It was hard to get the two of them apart, to be honest. They have a bond that seems impossible to break. Several photos highlighted this bond in the way they touched, caressed and gazed at each other. As the evening came to a close, I thanked them both for their time and the wonderful vision of love they gave me.
It is a feeling of being lifted off of your feet when you see a romance so strong. It seemed a bit sad to say goodbye to them, but I am sure I will see them again for a round of baby pictures. I wish them a happy life and a healthy young one!
