She stands with bated breath upon the edge of a cliff, veil fluttering in the breeze. Specks of sunlight carefully perch on the shimmering fabrics of her dress as the daylight fades into the ocean waves. She is a Greek goddess. She is Athena. Her peachy eyelids slowly open to reveal the solid chocolate orbs that would surely strike a man dead in his tracks when their eyes meet.
Indeed, my model Katerina looked very much like an ethereal entity as she floated upon the seaside, chiffon fabric gathered in her hands while she strode through the shallow waters. As soon as this woman put on a wedding dress, she transformed in front of my very eyes. It was like it had given her power – I got chills! Katerina is a gifted model, and as I was snapping her portraits, it was as if she could do no wrong. No angle was unflattering, and no picture was wasted.
I chose the brilliant Akamas peninsula in Cyprus as our backdrop. Truthfully, Katerina stole the show, but the breathtaking beauty of the beach's rocky cliffside and dazzling waters couldn't be drowned out. As I looked at the woman before me, a picture began to emerge in my head.
“She longed for the sea... although it made her feel small, it also made her feel free.
The caress of the gentle waves kissing her feet and the sun soaking into her beautiful smile brought out all the glorious feelings a woman can have on a day like that.”
Although she certainly created a supernatural silhouette, dress billowing in the wind gusts that came down from the cliffside, there was something ultimately human. Something feminine... strong... powerful. We all finished our day exhausted, glistening with sweat while the sand chafed in between our toes. The whole team went home satisfied with a spectacular photo shoot of a wedding editorial, but the image of a goddess will forever stick in my head when I see the seaside.
